To study how a soft object changes depending on the forces applied to it, I drew a patterned pillow compressed by my hand from real life observation. The pillow was chosen as the squishy material, numerous folds, and pattern would emphasize the differences between the compressed and uncompressed sides.

Process Work

Sketch to Final

During the initial sketch, I focus on the basic shapes of the hand and the pillow, including the larger subdivisions caused by the folds. I added all the smaller folds in the refined sketch while keeping the larger subdivisions in mind. I start shading by filling in the major shadow shapes to ensure the areas in shadow will be darker than areas in the light. I then add halftones to blend out the shadow shapes and add darker tones where necessary.
